Self Talk

What kind of things do you say to yourself? Do you realize how powerful those words and thoughts are?

I've been training again for an indoor triathlon and the most challenging part for me is the swimming. Whenever someone asks how it's going I always reply that the swimming is kicking my butt. I didn't look forward to the swimming and when I did my training it showed in the results. I talked myself out of doing well and getting better.

It finally dawned on me how much I was hurting myself with my own self talk. I wasn't giving myself a chance of getting better. I finally realized what I was doing and changed what I saying. In my mind I started telling myself that it was a challenge but I was getting the better of it. When someone asks how the training is going my reply now is I'm getting better and I love the challenge.

I'm not ready for the Olympics but I improved my distance by 50% in a matter of days. All by keeping positive thoughts and images in my mind. I'm not sure who said it but "Whether you think you can or can't, you are usually right." is so very true.

What are you telling yourself that you can't do? What negative thoughts are limiting your life? Keep the positive images instead and keep the positive self talk. Don't give up because YOU know YOU can do it!

I know you have heard it before, we have all heard it before... but it's so true. Attitude is everything. We can't control other people (we can influence them though), we can't control the weather, we can't control many many things.

The one thing we have absolute control over is our attitude. We control how we react to what happens to us. We control how we respond to situations. What is your attitude? Do we accept the challenge to fix the situation or do we get mad? Do we work to take the opportunity to understand what happened and learn from it? Do we wake up every day and go to sleep every night thankful for the challenges and opportunities given to us?

When you go through your day keep in mind that you control how you respond to things. Smile and accept the challenges. Keep positive thoughts throughout the day. Smile and keep moving forward.

You can't lose if you keep the proper attitude and keep moving forward. YOU can do anything YOU want to do!!

Look Around You

It was a beautiful fall day here in Southeastern Michigan. The sun was out, the leaves are turning their fall colors, the air is crisp, and the sky was clear. It just makes you think about how wonderful the world is.

Enjoy what you have today. Appreciate the wonders that are around us. Be thankful for the gifts we have. Yes, we always need to strive to improve ourselves and our world. Make sure you take the time to appreciate the beauty in the world though.

Do you have a plan for your day, for your week? Why not have one for your life?

You probably make plans for your Friday or Saturday nights to make sure you meet your friends, have fun, etc. Why wouldn't you do that for your life? We want to enjoy our weekend and want to enjoy our lives too.

Make time today to make plans for your life. It starts with documenting your dreams and goals and then making a plan on meeting them.

Have you ever wondered why certain things happen? Why this thing happened to you? Why this? Why that?

I'm a firm believer that things happen for a reason. We may not know what the reasons are but things always happen for a reason. We may not have prepared enough for a presentation and it wasn't successful. You may have gotten an A on that test because you committed yourself to studying.

Sometimes people get hurt or sick and those we may never know what the reasons are. Sure, we can explain the biology of the sickness but we can't understand why you or a loved one got sick. In those situations I try to remember that God has placed a challenge before me. It's up to me though to work through the challenge. Remember, He won't give you a challenge, know matter what it is, that you can't handle.

When something happens look and see if there was something you could have done different that would have impacted the situation. Learn from it and move on. Always remember that you are not alone and take comfort in that.

Look Around You

When you look around every day what do you see? Do you only see the negative things? Have you noticed all the good things? The beauty or the beast?

Sure, you can always find the negative in any situation. If you look though there is always a positive too. It may be easier to find the bad but the good is there. Stop what you're doing and look around. See the sunshine or listen to the rain. Hear the children laugh and the love of the parents or couple near you. See the smile of contentment on your significant other, better yet look in the mirror and smile yourself.

Take the time today to see the good around you and make sure you give someone else something to smile about too!

Rock or Diamond

When diamonds are mined from the earth they aren't brought up to the sunlight all shiney and beautiful. They are not ready to be placed on engagement rings for our beautiful wives. When diamonds are mined they are dirty and surrounded by rock. Even after the crystal is isolated someone needs to chip away the unneeded parts to find the beautiful diamond inside.

Did someone create the diamond or did they just chip away the dirt and grim? Did someone create the diamond or did they just find what was already there?

Just like the showcase diamond that is un-covered you need to discover your hidden diamond. God created and placed a diamond in each of us but challenged all of us to find it and share it. Our beauty and potential is unparalleled but only once we find it.

What are you doing to discover your diamond? How are you sharing your talents and gifts? It's a waste to hide the gemstone in your drawer and it's a waste to not show and share your gifts.

Plan, Do, Check, Adjust

Do you think that Thomas Edison created the lightbulb on his first attempt? Henry Ford the Model T the first time?

Do football coaches go in at halftime and keep the same game plans they started with?

While I wasn't there for Edison's and Ford's great accomplishments and I'm not a football coach I can guarantee they made adjustments along the way. Just like them so are our lives.

Plan, Do, Check, Adjust (PDCA) is a common format for doing this. We need to create a plan (i.e. Dreams and Goals) and follow it, not just talk about it. Go down this path of action and check on things. Are you meeting your goals? Moving towards them? Not making any progress? Once you've done that make adjustments to your original plans. Continue again and again until you complete your goals.

No one on earth is perfect and things we see today may not be correct tomorrow. Something we planned on doing may take longer or may not be needed. The beauty of PDCA is the continuous improvements.

What are your goals and are you following PDCA to meet them?
